Uganda - There must be no more talk of leaving us to get sick and die

For immediate release: March 11, 2005 - Uganda

The International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS is shocked and deeply dismayed to read that members of the Parliamentary Committee on HIV/AIDS reportedly suggest that providing anti-retroviral treatment may in fact be contributing to the spread of HIV/AIDS and that it might be better to let people with AIDS die rather than having access to these life-saving drugs.

HIV positive woman beaten to death by family

An HIV-positive woman was ostracised, beaten up and murdered by her own relatives in a village in the western Indian state of Gujarat, reports the Independent Online (16/02/05). ICW calls on ICW members and supporters to write to their Indian Embassy/High Commission in protest.

Bangkok Leadership Programme Press Release

Global Strategy: Breastfeeding critical for child survival

UNICEF and WHO call for increased commitment to appropriate feeding practices for all infants and young children.

The strategy also highlights the issue of optimal feeding of the roughly 2.6 million children who are born to HIV-infected women each year. The absolute risk of HIV transmission through breastfeeding - globally between 5% and 20% - needs to be balanced against the increased risk of morbidity and mortality when infants are not breastfed. All HIV-infected mothers should receive information about the risks and benefits of various options and guidance in choosing the most suitable option.

4.8% of young girls in Rwanda are HIV positive

A HIV Sentinel Survey amongst pregnant women attending clinics indicates the AIDS prevalence rate among the girls aged between 15 and 19 is now estimated at 4.8 per cent and the majority live in urban centres.
