Where are Young Women?

It's time to shift our thinking to begin to see young women as resources, as carrying a piece of the puzzle that carries important information. Young women are victimised, but they are not just victims. The skills they have learned to develop in order to survive in a world that places such societal meaning on their bodies and behaviours are the very skills that can help fight AIDS.

Barcelona was the fifth international AIDS conference I have attended. At each of these conferences, there has been talk about young women and HIV. How much of this talk has been with young women? Very little. Since 1994 when I began attending international conferences on AIDS I have sought out other youth, especially other young women. Every time there has been either just myself or one other young woman. It is now many years later, and although I am no longer considered a 'youth' I am still searching for these voices.
